It is Friday afternoon May 21, 1965 at Hunterspoint Avenue and you are riding the first Cannonball of the summer season to East Hampton. Imagine yourself sitting in one of the Yale deck chairs. The attendant has opened the door to serve you a cool adult beverage. You are back in the pre-Balsamic Dreams era when folks of means had not yet developed the vocabulary to discuss the types of igneous rock that filtered your bottled water. Gin and tonic with extra lime you tell the attendant. No need to specify a brand. Mr. Mac only serves the good stuff. And if you had ridden before with Russ Golding, your amiable parlor car attendant, he already had your Gordon's and White Rock tonic ready. It was a different Long Island Rail Road then and people like Mr. Mac and LIRR President Tom Goodfellow knew that PASSENGER was spelled with capital letters.
